Unathi Nkayi’s dismissal from Kaya 959 in 2021 by the station’s Human Resources head Bhekiwe Khumalo is making waves again following the decision by the singer and media personality to challenge the radio station’s decision to fire her. Unathi has further expressed plans to document the whole case process in order to give hope to those fighting big corporations, a decision her family was in support of.
Sunday World recently shared that the Kwa Nolali singer was fired for refusing to apologise to colleague and radio presenter Sizwe Dhlomo, after wrongfully accusing him of being abusive, swearing and being aggressive towards her.
A statement seen by the publication from Unathi on the allegations reads:
“Yesterday (sic) during the crossover of my show to Kaya Drive with Sizwe, Sizwe swore at me and was extremely aggressive towards me for pointing out that he is always late to take over the desk for his show. His immediate rhetoric was ‘just f@#kn leave then just f@#n leave’ shouting this across the room in front of Keneilwe, Tyrolese and Sandile. This behaviour is unprofessional, unacceptable, and abusive.”
Sizwe defended himself by requesting a studio audio recording of the verbal exchange between them, and the audio supported Sizwe’s version of events.
The publication further shared contents of the station’s internal investigation conclusion letter sent to Unathi after hearing the audio requested by Sizwe which reads:
“Having listened to the audio from the studio recording, it is apparent that no profanities were used by Mr Dhlomo during the engagement with you. What was in addition unequivocal from the audio, was the uttering of the word ‘f*ck’ prior to the news and at the culmination of your argument with Mr Dhlomo. Premised on the aforementioned, the business cannot take any action against Mr Dhlomo. Now given the aforementioned findings, you are requested to tender a written apology to Mr Dhlomo within five days hereof, failing which the business will be compelled to consider other matters, due to your false allegations, which constitute a breach of your contract.”
Unathi was said to have responded by email to the station’s HR and cc’ed Sizwe on the email, something Sizwe did not appreciate considering the level of damage the allegations could have done to his reputation and career. Unathi was again requested to send an apology directly to Sizwe and she sent one where she, according to the publication, only apologised for claiming that the radio presenter had sworn at her, with nothing said about the abusive and aggressive claims.
