Actress and newsreader Palesa Madikwane left many social media users in heavy conversation when she shared a video of herself burning her “ibhayi” a white, red and black cloth worn by those with an ancestral calling.
The former Generations star who shares a child with flamboyant media personality Somizi Mhlongo did this as a sign of her full commitment to God.
Having shared her spiritual journey in the past, Palesa has always been a Christian and a firm believer in her badimo (ancestors) as she shared. Featuring in one of the episodes of Somizi’s reality show Living the Dream with Somizi, Palesa had a deep conversation with her and Somizi’s daughter Bahumi on the importance of performing ancestral rituals.
In a post shared 93 weeks ago, Palesa shared her spiritual guide captioning it:
“What a great spiritual consultation I had yesterday with my prayer warrior @mthandazi_sbanisezwe umthandazeli sbanisezwe… kuya khanya 🕯🕯🕯 Thokoza.”

Palesa seems to be singing a different tune now after she shared a video where she not only cut and tore her sangoma traditional cloth but went on to burn it. This all done while she prayed “denouncing the spirit of ubungoma (tradition healing),” singing and cancelling all bad spirits in her life.
She captioned her post:
“There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus. To break every chain, break every chain, break every chain. To break every chain, break every chain, break every chain.”

The media personality’s post created a lot of mixed reactions with some users rooting for her and some saying she was insulting ubungoma religion:
“How I wish u did this privately, this is an insult to many who have a right to believe in whatever they believe in, u can imagine how u would feel if someone would publicly burn the Bible. Let’s learn to respect people’s beliefs bethuna. U are a respected public figure my love 🙏. Let’s be tolerant of each other.”
“I’m a believer like you but shaming other people’s beliefs it’s wrong… what’s worst even the Bible has that in writing… kodwa ke Qhubeka your decision…”
“This post was unnecessary ous waka. Different people, different beliefs, religious…. Dissapointed 😢.”
