Known for his iconic online persona Sis Maria, Thato Mashifane has opened up about the struggles he faces as fans find it difficult to separate him from the character.
The Limpopo-born content creator, who is also a musician, beatmaker and music producer, recently went live on TikTok to share that fans have shown up at his house wanting him to be dressed as Sis Maria.
Appearing emotional, Thato stated, “It’s not fair because I am not that, I am just playing those characters, and for me to reply badly or say I cannot take pictures or cannot do one, two, three, I turn out to be a bad person because I need to rest.”
Noting that he appreciates the support he receives, Thato shared, “I don’t know what I would do without your support but it’s too much. It’s too much how other people treat me like I am not myself. I have to be Maria every day whether I like it or not and that’s not possible. You never see [American actor and producer] Tyler Perry being Madea [fictional character] every day.”
Thato is also heard saying that he had recently posted a video of himself performing which did not sit well with some social media users.
“I’ve never been on stage as myself. I’ve wanted to but I can’t. I understand that because the time has not yet arrived. So I posted my video and there were so many people criticising and saying I have to stick to Maria otherwise I’m going to lose followers.”
A screen recording of a portion of Thato’s live TikTok session was shared on X.
