You can take Tyla out of South Africa, but you can’t take the heritage and culture out of her no matter where she goes in the world.
Tyla recently went on British Vogue for the popular ‘In my bag‘ video that reveals celebrities’ handbag essentials. In the video, the internationally acclaimed singer and songwriter pulled out a 2,5 kg bag of ACE maize meal which had mzansi in stitches.
As she pulled out the maize meal from her Givenchy bag Tyla said, “This is what we call maize meal. So in South Africa, we use this to make pap. Pap is like this and hot water, and some salt. You have to work out to make it like it’s a workout for real. You have to taste it though, it’s really good. Just put that there.”
The artist’s other essentials included, a ‘bedazzled’ Vaseline and Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, plus a Baies Diptyque Candle to make hotel rooms feel a little more cosy amongst other things.

Mzansi users found Tyla’s video funny as throughout all her international interviews with various publications and platforms she has been adamant about teaching them about South African culture and diversity.
One user commented: “Reaching new heights of absurdity with the ‘what’s in my purse’ series when she pulled out a giant bag of maize.”
Another user said: “Not Tyla carrying Ace maize meal overseas. Ace needs to make her their ambassador.”
Singer Ngasii said, “The lady has mentioned on multiple occasions that she carries a bag of maize meal from home to make pap. Today, she decided to show us precisely what she had been saying this whole time with the BIGGEST bag of maize meal in all the land and I ADORED EVERY MINUTE!”
