One of South Africa’s most well-known rugby figures Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira had the honour of delivering the Webb Elis Cup in the match between South Africa and New Zealand that concluded the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France on Saturday night.
Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira is a Zimbabwean-South African retired rugby player. According to Roc Nation Sports – sports management division of Roc Nation – former Springbok prop is “one of the most iconic players to have ever represented South African and Springboks.”

Beast made his provincial debut for the Cell C Sharks in 2006, and two years later gained his Springbok cap. From there, Beast went onto a greater scene as he took to the international scenes of the rugby world.
His retirement came as a shock to many as he had announced it a few days after being part of the squad that secured the Web Ellis Cup in 2019. His plans for his retirement included furthering his studies, working on his foundation – The Beast Foundation – and simply working on his legacy.

Many rugby supporters were pleased to see him on the field again as he delivered the Webb Ellis Cup in the final game. He also took to Instagram to express what an honour it was for him to deliver the trophy.
