Miss Universe South Africa Bryoni Govender shared with fans that she will be taking a piece of home with her to the Miss Universe pageant in the form of a heritage-inspired national costume.
The Miss South Africa Instagram page explained that this year’s national costume – designed by Durban-based designer Casey Jeanne – has an African-Indian take to it, as Bryoni is of Indian descent. They added, “It was inspired by a sari and is adorned with traditional Zulu beads in a pattern inspired by an Ndebele print.”

Speaking about the design on Instagram, Casey shared, “We deliberately didn’t want an ostentatious, gaudy and over-the-top national costume for South Africa. But rather a high-fashion couture version that allows Bryoni to shine and shows South Africa’s skill on the world stage 🌍.”
She added that the dress was not flashy or huge but rather representative, making it the true definition of what a national costume should be about.
