The murder trial of renowned South African professional footballer, Senzo Meyiwa has faced another setback due to Advocate Charles Mnisi’s request for more time to prepare his defense.
According to Briefly, Mnisi, who took over representing accused number one, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, in February 2025, after the passing of Sibiya’s previous lawyer, Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, in December 2024, claimed he still needs additional time to review the case.
This is not the first time the trial has been postponed. The case, which began after Meyiwa’s tragic murder on October 26, 2014 when he was shot and killed during a home invasion at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s house in Vosloorus, has been marred by inconsistencies and controversy.
Mnisi had previously been given two months to prepare and then an additional week by Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng on April 14, 2025. However, Mnisi submitted an affidavit explaining his workload and why he still requires more time, acknowledging the judge’s previous skepticism.
Judge Mokgoatlheng expressed frustration, labeling Mnisi’s repeated requests as an “abuse of the system.” Nevertheless, he granted a further postponement, questioning Mnisi on his readiness. Mnisi stated that by May 19, he’ll assess whether he’s met his preparedness benchmarks. The judge’s concerns echo the sentiments of many South Africans invested in the case.
The trial has been adjourned until May 5, when Mnisi will declare his readiness to proceed. In the meantime, he will discuss timeframes with the prosecution for providing further evidence. The case’s complexity and Mnisi’s preparation challenges have contributed to the delays, sparking debate about the judicial process.
