With the studded collection of two rugby world cups, a British and Irish Lion’s series win and a rugby championship trophy, Siya Kolisi has arguably become one of the most successful springbok captains in the history of the game.
The 32-year-old is often praised by teammates and coaching staff alike for being an example to his teammates both on and off the field, and his commitment to making a difference with his foundation is second to none.

With all these attributes establishing the bok number 6 as a standout leader, the new Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus is faced with a headache of deciding whether he should keep the continuity with Siya steering the ship, or using the new rugby cycle as a chance to welcome a new and younger generation into the leadership role. One that will be capable of leading the national team to 2027 and beyond.
While many would prefer having Siya remain captain, given his success rate at major events, the reality is that he might not be a long-term option, this because he will be 37 by the time the Boks play at the next world cup.
In addition to that, Siya’s relocation to France has added more concerns as the Bok coach prefers having his captain in SA, for better communication purposes.

Speaking at a recent press conference the Springbok coach Rassie shared his sentiments when it comes to the captaincy role.
“There’s a lot of players who have signed with overseas clubs with clauses in their contracts that say they will stop playing international rugby. Siya has not signed with a clause like that,” Erasmus said.
Despite rumours that Siya was planning to retire after the 2023 World cup, Rassie adds that this is an indication that he still wants to play for South Africa.
“I think he is playing some of his best rugby. He looks really relaxed.
“I would always like to have our captain locally based,” Erasmus explained. “Just because it’s a call and a flight and we can have a weekend together where we can plan.
“This is a unique situation. He will be considered. He definitely wants to and is playing well enough. If we get the feeling that it’s doable, maybe there’s place for that. But I still have to suss it out.”

Meanwhile, fans have already identified three potential candidates in the form of Eben Etzebeth, Damian Willemse and Lukhanyo Am, should Rassie decide to make a captaincy change. All of the above-mentioned are locally based with Damian Willemse looking to be a perfect long-term option due to his age.
