After the launch of the AI drone project by the Department of Home Affairs, some citizens have begun to question and accuse Minister Leon Schreiber of taking credit for some initiatives that were brought about by the former minister, Aaron Motsoaledi.
The issue of the continuous rise in illegal immigration, as well as the country’s porous borders, has been a constant concern for South Africans. In efforts to combat this, Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber has announced the launch of AI drones, as well as body cameras, to tighten up the security along the border.
The minister highlighted his confidence in this initiative, as they have been able to collaborate and cooperate with the Department of Agriculture to pilot some of the technology that they were launching.
” What we saw was that there was a 215% increase in the number of attempted illegal crossings by undocumented persons that were prevented, and we were even able to showcase thousands of instances where the use of these drones actually led to apprehensions directly,” says the minister.

Although the success of this project would prove immensely beneficial for South Africans, some citizens, including former presidential spokesperson Khusela Diko, seem to have a bone to pick with the minister, as they believe that he is piggybacking a bit too much off of the work that former minister Aaron Mostoaledi had spent an extensive amount of time and effort trying to implement.
Furthermore, others highlight how Leon is merely implementing initiatives that the ANC government had failed to, in its many years in the department.

However, others have highlighted how when it comes to governance, the credit is not a determining factor, so long as service delivery and the tending to the needs of citizens are prioritised. Others have expressed that the minister is merely fulfilling the duties that his portfolio requires him to, and highlight the fact that the department does not belong to Aaron Motsoaledi.
Anyone can take credit as long as the work is done. This isn’t a school group project, Diko. We care about results, not who brought the crayons!
