The famous hashtag #OPENUPTHEINDUSTRY started as a way to encourage casting directors to not give the same famous people jobs but to open up the industry and give new, up-and-coming faces a chance.
South African award-winning actor and director Wiseman Mcube took to his social media platform to criticise the mistreatment of emerging actors in the South African entertainment industry.
The former The Wife actor encouraged South African casting directors to give actors that audition for shows a chance to showcase their talents.
He shared in a candid post, “The advertising advises holding auditions for a show, and hopefuls must prepare a monologue, song, dance piece, or poem. The casting director should allow applicants to present their work, even if it does not match the intended appearance.”
He further highlighted that up-and-coming actors need to be given the platforms to at least audition, as this will enhance their acting abilities in the future.
He also encouraged well-known actors to not look down on the up-and-coming-actors, as they were once in their position.
Social media users showed their support for the celebrity, emphasising the need for industry improvements.
One user applauded the actor’s individuality and the aura he exudes.
Another user advocated for artists to focus on their character and technique rather than open auditions, adding that performers should not quit after a terrible encounter or on their goals. Some even compare the misery of being rejected in an interview to the sorrow and despair experienced by South African athletes.
