Lebogang Motsumi, a motivational speaker and HIV activist, recently revealed on social media that her intense desire for fame during her teenage years resulted in an HIV diagnosis, further alleging that the late kwaito star Tebogo ‘Zombo’ Ndlovu was the person who purposely transmitted the virus to her.
Zombo, a former member of the kwaito group Aba Shante, succumbed to the disease in 2008 shortly after revealing his status to the world.
Lebogang took to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday morning detailing her experience with the late kwaito star.
She shared that when she was 17, she went to a club to watch the artist Chomee perform and there she allegedly spotted Zombo who asked for her number, which she gave.
She then admitted she was desperate to become a public figure: “Growing up, I have always wanted to be famous, and I saw this as my ticket to fame… We spoke on the phone for a couple of days and planned to meet, he came to my house because I was living alone at the time. We had unprotected sex and I really didn’t mind because I had a plan.”
Lebogang then alleged that Zombo had a plan of his own – to purposely infect her with HIV. She said: “This relationship was not one built on love. I wanted fame, and he wanted to infect me… Months later, he got ill and was admitted to Sunninghill Hospital and told me he had TB. I still made nothing out of it, and when he recovered, we continued having sex, I would even feed his drug addiction with my school fees money.”
The activist later fell pregnant and informed Zombo, who allegedly denied the pregnancy. This then allegedly prompted Lebogang to have an abortion in a backstreet clinic when she was approxiamately seven months pregnant.
“He then reached out and asked me to watch a music show on SABC 1. I think it’s called Live Amp now. He appeared on the show sitting in a wheelchair. He then disclosed his HIV status and mentioned he went around spreading the virus because he didn’t want to die alone…
“How do I know he infected me? At 16, I was pregnant, and after giving birth to a premature baby (after trying to abort), I tested negative for HIV, and Zombo was the next person I slept with after the burial of my son.”

Well, people lose weight, so It wasn’t a big deal. He approached me and asked for my numbers, and I gave them to him. We hugged, and he left the club. #BeyondSilence #letstalk

I eventually fell pregnant, and I was so excited. I called to inform him, and he denied the pregnancy. After some time at 6/7 months, I decided to have an abortion at a back street clinic. Went on with my life. #BeyondSilence #letstalk

HIV doesn’t have a face, and it can happen to anyone. Let’s start testing regularly with our partners. Get on prep, and use a condom consistently. An HIV infection is avoidable. @BeyondZeroSA #BeyondSilence #letstalk
