It’s almost unimaginable to think that just a couple years ago you’d be paying anything less than R35 for a 2 litre milk. The absurd rise in food prices even has celebrities like Xolile Tshabalala complaining about the ridiculous cost of food.
South African actress Xolile Tshabalala voiced her displeasure about the nation’s exorbitant food prices in an Instagram video that was posted on Sunday, 13 August. Her fans and social media followers backed her up and agreed that things had definitely gotten worse in terms of food costs.
South Africans all across the nation are feeling the harsh reality of an economy in decline. Despite South Africa managing to narrowly avoid entering a recession, according to Reuters, a pre-closed upmarket update in June by Nedbank reported by BusinessTech indicated that things were not looking great for the months to come.
The Blood & Water actress went on a rant on social media when noticed that the a Chomp chocolate now costs R7. Shocked, the actress shared her frustrations online. “Umhlaba uyaphenduka [The world is changing] I am telling you,” she said.
Following her reaction, Xolile’s fans and social media followers have expressed their legitimate worries about the startling grocery store prices in the comment section left by the actors.
“Hmm ya things are expensive,?2litre coke is now R27,00 ended settling for Coke Zero,” @zintomvi82 wrote.
“Oil, eggs, and milk zii [are] luxuries these days,” @nomimnotoza said.
