Showmax Original teenage-drama series Youngins cast member Toka Mtabane speaks about his journey on set.
With the relaunch of the streaming service, a lot of brand-new series have been introduced on the platform.
Younigins follows the lives of a group of friends who navigate adulthood together whilst having fun and learning a lot of life lessons. Toka plays the character of Khanya, a matric student at a boarding school who can be considered one of the popular kids.
His character depicts the typical matric student who falls in love with the prettiest girl in his grade.
“I was like Khaya in high school, popular with everyone, and talented in football and the arts as well,” shared Toka. “The only difference is that I was actually, you know, a smart kid; I had good grades. Otherwise, we’re quite similar in many ways.”
The actor was candid about his experience on set, adding that adapting to his new environment was not difficult given that he was familiar with his fellow cast members – former The River actor Thabiso Ramotshela and Kealeboga Masango who plays his girlfriend Buhle on the series.

When asked if anything made him nervous on set, Toka shared, “I don’t really get nervous. When I first arrived on set, I made sure that I familiarised myself with everyone – and read energies. However, sometimes I do get nervous when it’s time to actually go for a take and make the right choices when it comes to bettering my performance, but for me, that’s good nerves, you know?”
