She is known as the founder of the renowned SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards, and the woman who speaks life into people’s situations each time she switches on the microphone for Ukhozi’s gospel show Eshilo – but today Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule is the first to admit that the past few months have been quite challenging.
The renowned musical personality was diagnosed with lung cancer in May earlier this year. This comes shortly after she finished her last on-air appearance after struggling to finish the show in April.
She was later rushed to hospital where she was diagnosed.
As with most diagnoses, the news is usually a shock to those who hear it, and for Zanele, who is also a proud motivational speaker the feeling was very much that – shock.
In an interview with the news and entertainment publication Daily Sun, she highlighted that while things may seem challenging it has been her spirituality and professional support network who have kept her going.

“The are days when you do not even want to take your medication. Days when messages from loved ones asking, ‘How are you today? You will be alright,’ just irritate you,” she explained.
She continued that there are many times that she finds herself filled with endless questions.
“Days when you feel no one truly understands what you are enduring.”
However, she encourages others who feel the same way to acknowledge that they are not okay and seek support.
During this time, she revealed that she has received prayers of many churches and this has played an important part in keeping the faith.
