2024 Top beauty trends that redefined the year

There is no doubt that the beauty industry didn’t dominate this year, from skincare products to makeup routines. The industry is forever evolving.

At the beginning of 2024, many industry experts predicted that Artificial Intelligence (AI) would take over the beauty industry, resulting in a massive shift in how things are done.

According to beauty hub, Harpers Bazaar, AI’s role in beauty trends influences climate change, teenagers’ growth and the intersection of mysticism and capitalism.

Explaining this concept, beauty expert Dr Sophie Sotter adds, “This shift towards improved personalisation of experiences and interactions, even in a virtual domain.”

Here’s a look back at what trends redefined the year:

  • Sustainable beauty: Many major beauty companies transitioned to making products that benefit the environment, where they focused on using naturally-produced products and expert multifunctional products, lightweight foundations, tinted moisturisers, and serums that promote hydration and glow.
  • AI-Driven beauty consultations: According to the Beauty Therapy Institute, beauty companies invest in smart skincare products to help consumers deal with their skincare issues.
  • Skinimalism: This beauty trend focuses more on people wearing less makeup by emphasising skin-first beauty with multipurpose products, lightweight foundations, tinted moisturisers, and serums.
  • Biotechnology beauty:  Many beauty brands utilise biotechnology to create advanced skincare and makeup formulations, focusing on sustainable and ethical sourcing of functional ingredients.
  • Inclusive Beauty: Despite it being an ongoing debate in the beauty industry, this year showed us that when these brands listen to the public’s concern regarding their products, it increases their buying power. An example of this would be the Lingerie brand, Victoria’s Secret having larger sizes and makeup foundation shades that have darker shades.
