5 Reasons retinol is good for your skin

Your skincare routine may consist of numerous products, but understanding which ones are crucial for protecting your skin barrier is essential.

Neutrogena, a skincare hub, describes retinol as a Vitamin A product that transforms to retinoic acid via skin-specific enzymes, adding that, the product promotes cell turnover, avoids pore clogging, protects against blemishes, increases skincare product penetration, and improves overall skin health.

According to Christopher Panzica, a licenced aesthetician, the skincare product offers a variety of applications. When you become old, “your skin cell turnover and collagen production slow,” adding, “When applied topically, retinols help bring your skin cells and function back to a more youthful state.”

Retinol products, which are popular for controlling acne, improving skin look, and lowering ageing indications, can also help to reduce fine lines and big pores while improving skin texture. However, their variety and potential for discomfort can make them difficult to utilise, according to the NY Times.

Dermatologist Zenovia Gabriel, MD, advises against using retinoids due to their sun sensitivity, particularly for patients with sensitive skin problems such as rosacea. She recommends that pregnant and breastfeeding women use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 regularly and avoid retinoids.

Neutrogena provides five reasons why you should include retinol in your skincare routine:

  1. Unclogs pores to clear skin and prevent acne breakouts.
  2. Improves the effectiveness of various medicated creams and gels.
  3. Improves acne appearance by making pimples less visible and preventing new spots and blemishes.
  4. Increases cell turnover, which reduces the buildup of dead skin cells and oil in hair strands.
  5. Combats ageing by increasing collagen formation, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and encouraging new blood vessels.
