The 15th annual Feather Awards saw many local stars shine on the pink carpet. The event took place at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg and was hosted by the Modiselle sisters, Refilwe and Bontle.
Founded by Thami Dish, the Feather Awards, which took place on 9 November, is Africa’s biggest awards ceremony that celebrates all who support, inspire, and empower the LGBTQIA+ community. While many unique awards were handed out on stage, it did not take away from the fashion.
Award-winning transgender activist Yaya Mavundla added another award to her name after winning Best Styled Individual. Yaya proved that she was worthy of the award as she donned a custom Queer Comfort dress with a bold message.
Taking to Instagram, Yaya shared, “I took my heart and put it on the fabric. Thank you to each and every publication that has written about the Grindr attacks, corrective rapes, homophobia & the killings of the LGBTIQ+ community. To the victims & their families and loved ones, I am so sorry, may justice prevail.”
