A few days ago, I scrolled through Instagram and came across a post by a hair therapist explaining some of the main causes of an itchy scalp and lo and behold my allergies could be the cause – as if my allergies have not brought me enough grief over the last few months.
Here are a few questions to ask yourself to narrow down the causes of an itchy scalp:
1. Do you see white flakes on the shoulders of your garments?
If you have white flakes coupled with an itchy scalp, you might have dandruff. The best way to treat dandruff is with an anti-dandruff shampoo.
2. Has the itching begun when starting a new product?
You might have an adverse allergic reaction or sensitivity to a new product. The best way to figure this out is by giving your scalp a break from the product and seeing if the itch persists. If it stops, the best solution would be to discontinue using the product in question.
3. Do you have psoriasis?
Psoriasis could also be the source of an itchy scalp and chances are high that if you have plaque psoriasis, scalp psoriasis might be on the cards for you at some point. Over-the-counter medicated shampoos for scalp psoriasis can help treat your itchy scalp.
4. Do you have hay fever or other seasonal allergies?
If so, you might have an itchy sensation on various parts of your body too. Take an antihistamine and see if your irritation and itchy scalp continue. If not, your allergies might be the cause of your itchy scalp.
Finding the cause of an itchy scalp is a trial-and-error process; cancelling out of possible causes might take some time. Take your time to find the root cause and relieve yourself of the irritation for good.
