Chunky knit jerseys are always a winter favourite, but looking chic in them can sometimes be a challenge. Over the years, I’ve learned a few tricks for wearing a thick-knit jersey to look more stylish and less frumpy.
Here are 5 tips you’ll love for adding style to your chunky knit jerseys in winter:
Commit to monochrome
Wear your chunky sweater with pants in a similar colour to create a long, continuous silhouette. This minimises bulk and makes your outfit appear more streamlined and chic. Try wearing a cream-coloured sweater with white or off-white pants.
Pair with a pattern
Pair your chunky sweater with patterned pants or coat that includes similar colours. This look blends the sweater with the pants or coat, creating a cohesive look that extends your frame. Look at styling a white or cream sweater with leopard print pants; it’s chic and can be very flattering.
Layer with a longer top
Wear a long button-up shirt under your chunky sweater to extend below the sweater and draw the eye downward. This is especially flattering for pear-shaped figures. A cream sweater over a white or blue button-up with denims is chic and casual.
Add a cherry on top
Add a coat or a vest over your chunky sweater to create a more polished appearance. Outerwear helps to draw attention to specific areas and enhances your shape. Consider multiple layers—a chunky knit with denims layered underneath a cardigan, with a classic neutral trench to top.
Master the 3 tucks
Tucking your jersey in can add a lot of interest to a look. There are three ways to tuck a chunky knit to add style to your outfit:
1. The pants tuck
Tuck your chunky sweater into your pants for a more defined waist. This technique prevents the sweater from adding bulk and creates a tailored look. A cream sweater tucked into jeans can look very chic.
2. The skirt tuck
Tuck the sweater into a high-waisted skirt to balance out the chunkiness and create a chic silhouette. A black sweater tucked into an olive pencil skirt works well.
3. The bra tuck
Tuck the hem of your sweater into your bra for a cropped look. This gives the sweater a more fitted appearance and is a trendy way to style oversized pieces. For instance, tuck a black jersey into the bra and pair it with jeans.
