Your hair can take a real beating in Summer. Saltwater from the ocean and chlorine from pools are both harsh on your strands, leaving them dry, brittle, and prone to damage.
Don’t worry—there are several ways you can protect your hair while still enjoying everything summer has to offer. Here are some top tips to keep your hair healthy and vibrant during those summer swims
1. Prep your hair with fresh water
Before diving into the ocean or pool, soak your hair with fresh, clean water. Hair acts like a sponge—once it’s saturated with fresh water, it won’t absorb as much saltwater or chlorinated water. You can do this by rinsing your hair under a shower or simply pouring water from a bottle over it.
2. Use a leave-in conditioner
One of the best ways to protect your hair from harsh elements is by applying a leave-in conditioner before swimming. Look for one with natural oils, like coconut or argan oil, which create a protective barrier and keep moisture locked in. You can also use a conditioner with UV filters to shield your hair from sun damage while you swim.
3. Wear a swim cap
While not everyone loves the look of a swim cap, it’s one of the most effective ways to protect your hair. Swim caps help block out saltwater and chlorine while keeping your hair relatively dry. For those who spend a lot of time in the water, this is a practical way to minimise damage, especially if you have coloured or treated hair.
4. Rinse immediately after swimming
As soon as you’re done swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water to remove any residual salt, sand, or chlorine. The longer these elements stay in your hair, the more damage they can cause. If you have access to a shower at the beach or pool, make it a habit to rinse off right away.
5. Use a clarifying shampoo once a week
Chlorine and salt can build up in your hair over time, leaving it dry and dull. Use a clarifying shampoo once a week to deeply cleanse your hair and remove any lingering chemicals or salt. Be careful not to overuse it, though, as clarifying shampoos can strip your hair of natural oils. Follow it up with a deep conditioner to replenish moisture.
6. Opt for a protective hairstyle
Keeping your hair tied up can reduce its exposure to saltwater and chlorine. Braids and buns are excellent styles for the beach or pool because they keep your hair contained and tangle-free. Plus, they minimise the surface area that comes into contact with water, reducing the chance of damage.
7. Hydrate your hair with a deep conditioning treatment
Saltwater and chlorine are both incredibly drying to the hair, so it’s important to replenish lost moisture. After a day at the beach or pool, treat your hair to a deep conditioning mask or oil treatment. Look for products containing nourishing ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil, or keratin, which help restore moisture and repair damage.
8. Avoid heat styling
Summer is already tough on your hair, and using heat styling tools will only exacerbate the damage. Give your hair a break from blow dryers, flat irons, and curling wands. Let your hair air-dry naturally, or opt for heat-free styling methods. If you must use heat, be sure to apply a heat protectant spray.
9. Use a wide-tooth comb
After swimming, your hair is more prone to tangles and breakage. To minimise damage, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair gently. Start from the ends and work your way up to avoid pulling and snapping strands. Avoid using brushes, which can cause more breakage, especially when your hair is wet and vulnerable.
10. Cover your hair
If you’re spending extended time in the sun, consider wearing a hat or scarf to protect your hair from UV rays, which can fade colour and cause dryness. Plus, a hat provides extra protection for your scalp, which is just as susceptible to sunburn as the rest of your skin.
