Trends to trash: Fashion items that need to be left in 2024

In 2024, the fashion industry was introduced to a lot of trends and while some items are a must-have some items it can be agreed that some items need to be left behind.

From red carpet events to everyday fashion choices, this year experienced both highs and lows. The fashion industry had significant achievements, but there were also notable misses, as some designers failed to grasp the current trends – this argument could be because they recreated the same looks from every event.

As much as we celebrate those who donned their attire, some fashion items would not cut in 2025, as they just do not look fashionable anymore.

Speaking to the fashion hub, Vogue Australia, digital editor Francesca Wallace, said: “2024 Is all about the well-fitted pieces that last a lifetime,” adding, “With a few on-trend fun things thrown in for good measure.”

Here are some fashion items you need to ditch in 2024:

    • Bubble skirt: Many may argue that these skirts give off a Y2K vibe but in 2025, these bubble skirts need to go as it’s not only difficult to style but fashion trends are moving to sustainable choices that are cleaner and minimalist.
    • Old-guard outerwear: Vogue Australia states that this trend feels more stagnant with people over-layering winter wear.
    • Monochrome: Although many people gravitate towards monochromatic wardrobes for their simplicity and elegance, it’s time to embrace the vibrant hues of life and infuse some lively colours into your outfits.
    • Tunic tops: The popularity of certain types of tops has declined over time, much like the decline of skinny jeans in fashion trends. This shift is likely attributed to the unflattering fit that these styles can create for a significant portion of the population, making them less desirable.
