Sleeping with wet hair might not seem like the most ideal thing to do, as you can potentially get a cold, but if you find ways to do it without damaging your hair, would you still do it?
Davines states that sleeping with wet hair can lead to scalp problems like bacterial growth, fungal infections and skin irritation as bacteria tend to grow in spaces that are either cold or wet.
Co-founder of DryFix Divya Sabanayagam says, “The most common question we’re asked is how wet can hair be while going to bed. It should only be slightly damp, and not completely wet. Sleeping with completely wet hair damages the follicle and causes breakage, so you’ll want to blast it with the hairdryer to dry out 70 per cent of your hair or let it naturally dry till it’s just a little damp.”
She further explains that if you sleep with your wet hair opt for silk pillowcases instead of cotton as cotton ones tend to be rough on your hair leading to tangling and breakage.
Here is what you need to know if you want to sleep with wet hair, according to various beauty experts:
- Co-founder of DryFix, Anjali Merchant says if you have straight hair you should prep your hair before going to bed so you do not wake up with tangles on the strands of your hair, adding, “If you would like to wake up with curls, make sure to twist your hair well and secure it in a top knot, so that your strands can dry into those curls. However, if you would like to leave your hair straight, push it all up in one uniform direction and let it dry naturally.”
- Davines recommends that people with frizzy hair use an anti-frizz oil where they will twist their hair into a top knot, wrap it in a bun, wear a silk scarf, and delay combing their hair in the morning. The above-mentioned hub adds that you should also avoid tying it to a pillowcase and use hairspray to prevent frizz, as it helps to keep your hair frizz-free and allows you to sleep more easily.
- For curly hair, Anjali suggests maintaining your curls and eliminating frizz so that you can achieve loosely textured curls, tie a braid at the top of your head and separate them using fingers or a wide-toothed comb, adding that, you should flip your hair to help it sink in.
