5 ways to keep denim looking new for longer

by All4Women
denim

Let’s face it, denim never goes out of style. It’s also by no means the most budget-friendly fabric around, so keeping it looking good should be a priority. And while it’s definitely durable, there are a few steps you can take to keep denim looking newer for longer.

1. The first wash is critical. The first time you wash a denim garment, ensure that you handwash it in cold water. Toss two tablespoons of salt in to set the dyes in the fabric and preserve the colour.

2. Wash when necessary. Denim doesn’t need to be washed as often as other fabrics. So avoid washing denim clothes after each wear. The dyes in the fabric release with both wear and in the wash so try to preserve these as long as possible to keep your denim looking newer. When you do wash your jeans, the best bet is to turn them inside out and wash in cold water to prevent fading.

3. Dry perfectly. Hang denim up inside out to prevent fading – especially from the sun. Allow denim to dry naturally and avoid tumble dryers. Remember, your jeans may appear to have shrunk after washing, but the fabric will soften after that first wear.

4. You’ll need to iron right too. Because denim is so dense, ironing isn’t always required. But if you do notice a wrinkle, turn your garment inside out and place a towel over the denim. Then iron the towel. This prevents direct heat from coming into contact with the fabric – preserving it perfectly.

5. What to avoid to keep denim fab. Steer clear of bleach! This not only weakens the fabric but fades the dye, making your denim age faster. Don’t dry-clean – the harsh chemicals used in the dry-cleaning process will result in fading and ageing.
