Working out during summer can sometimes make you less eager to workout due to heat waves which could be a major setback for many people looking to exercise in the summer season.
If you’re not careful, you can end up suffering from a heat-related health condition such as a heat stroke, heat exhaustion or extreme dehydration, all of which can greatly derail you from your fitness goals. However, to every problem we face, there is always a solution and here is how to work out during the summer season when exercising in the heat.
Stay hydrated/ drink water
During the summer seasons water should in fact become your best friend.
Water helps you stay hydrated. However, if you’re planning to exercise for more than 60 minutes, Penn Medicine suggests drinking sports drinks.
According to Penn Medicine, sports drinks helps when working out for a long period of time, especially during the summer season, as they contain potassium and electrolytes that can rehydrate and replenish your body.
The high levels of sodium is said to be good for your body and sodium is a key ingredient for a hot day.
Take a cold shower
Before your workout begins, start by taking a cold shower. Once you finish your shower, it is best to not blow dryer your hair instead leave it wet to help you stay cool during your workout.
Wear light clothing
Bright colors are good since they will reflect the sun and also help to make you more visible to oncoming traffic when you are taking a jog. Cotton is a light-weight and affordable material that can help you stay dry.
It is best to wear shorts and sweat-wicking shirts.
Use sunscreen
Wearing sunscreen to avoid sunburn.
Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50 and one that is waterproof so that it doesn’t come off once you start sweating.
Take it indoors
On days when there is an excessive heat warning it is best to train at your home or local gym, this can be your best decision to stay cool and avoid a heat-related injury while still getting in your workout.
Timing yourself and know your limit
It is best to exercise in the morning as it helps you stay energized throughout the day and sleep better at night.
Listen to your body and if you begin to feel dizzy, nauseous, or tired, give yourself a break. Taking some time off for rest is better than overdoing your workout and getting sick or injured and having to stop working out altogether.
