Hair is big business, and there are loads of extensions to choose from that range in quality, colour, length and texture. Wigs are a big trend and the easiest way to hide a bad hair day, but what do you need to know before buying a wig?
Here are six important things you need to know before you buy a new wig.
1. Type of hair. Wigs can either be made from human hair or synthetic hair, and even sometimes human hair blends. Synthetic hair is cheaper than human hair, and many human hair blends are straightener and curler safe. Virgin human hair looks more realistic and it can be dyed. Wigs come in many hairstyles such as curly, kinky, straight or wavy. The type of hair affects how manageable the style of the hair is.
Before you buy a new wig, ask what it’s made of and decide whether it meets your needs.
2. Does the colour suit you? Wigs come in a variety of colours. You should look for a wig in a colour that flatters your skin tone. Hold it against your face in natural light to check whether it makes you look washed out or not.

It’s best to have at least one wig in the same shade as your natural hair colour, and then a few variations on that shade. If you’re looking to splash out on something trendy, many wigs come in ombré colours or pastels, perfect for making a statement.
3. Size. The size of a wig really, really matters! Everyone has a different sized head and it’s important to find a wig that is comfortable. If you’re buying in person, make sure to try it on. If you’re buying online, check the measurements on the site against the circumference of your head. Many wigs have adjustable elastic straps, which makes finding the right size much easier.
4. Think about length. Short wigs are easier to wear than long wigs, especially in the summer when it’s really warm outside. Long wigs are fun, especially if you’ve never been able to have long hair before, but can easily tangle and consistently need to be brushed out.
When you’re buying a wig, make sure to choose the right length for your lifestyle. Think about how long you’re prepared to spend styling your hair. Whatever you decide, it’s best to buy a wig that’s longer than you would like, as you can always get it styled to suit you and get it trimmed to the correct length.
5. Does it suit your lifestyle? Your lifestyle, your schedule, and your ability to style hair should be taken into consideration when buying a wig. You need to think about how much you’re willing to spend on a wig as well as how you will be styling it every day. Whatever you do, don’t buy a wig thinking you’ll change your lifestyle to suit it – be honest with yourself, if you don’t spend 30 minutes styling your hair now, you’re unlikely to start!

6. Don’t forget the cap. The construction of the cap of the wig is another factor to consider before purchasing a wig. The front part of the wig is usually constructed with either lace or silk, and designed with a structured parting or designed so that you can create a parting anywhere you choose.
A silk closure is made with a silk base, where the individual strands of hair are embedded into the silk with a layer of lace. The knots are not visible because they are embedded in that layer of silk, giving a more scalp-like appearance. Think about how flexible you want your wig to be and how important a more natural look is to you.
