Dandruff can be embarrassing, especially when it is visible and someone points it out in public.
It’s natural though, especially when you have gone some time without washing your hair. It’ll give you a clear indication that you are due for a wash day.
You’ll notice the flaky skin on your scalp, eyebrows, hair beard and even your shoulders. It will cause your scalp to be itchy, making the flaking a lot worse and visible. Mayo clinic states that these may be worse and severe if you are stressed and during dry seasons.
According to Mayo clinic, some of the causes of dandruff may include:
- Irritated oily skin
- Dry skin
- A yeast like fungus that feeds on oils on the scalp of most adults
- Sensitivity to hair care products
- Skin conditions like eczema
When you start noticing the dandruff, washing your hair with a good amount of dandruff shampoo (which is available at your local beauty stores) should be your first step.
In addition, the Web MD Editorial Contributors, suggest these natural treatments that are moisturising and can help fight bacteria:
- Coconut oil – Rub a generous amount into your scalp then wait about an hour before shampooing your hair.
- Aloe vera – Rub just a bit onto your scalp before shampooing your hair. Do not leave onto the scalp for longer than 30 minutes.
- Apple cider vinegar – Important to note that the smell of this is quite strong and should not come into contact with your eyes. Mix a quarter cup into a quarter cup of water and pour and rub into the scalp. Leave it in for about 15 minutes and rinse thoroughly
- Baking soda – Wet your hair, then add some baking soda, allow for it to simmer into the scalp for two minutes then rinse off thoroughly.
- Lemon juice – Here you can either wet hair then massage the lemon juice into the scalp or mix a few teaspoons of lemon juice into water then pour it for your hair and leave it on for 5 minutes before rinsing off.
For really stubborn dandruff, you need to consult a doctor.
