Braided hairstyles have been a popular style in African hair for hundreds of years and it’s clear that having braids is always on-trend. From ombre looks, colourful strands and epic accessories, there’s almost no limit to what you can do with this cool hairstyle.
Braids are also relatively low-maintenance and work perfectly as a protective hairstyle. But, this a style as cool as this, TLC is still required. For instance:
1. Wash your braids. Healthy hair starts at the roots, so it’s essential to make sure your scalp is clean and nourished, especially when your hair is braided. Do this by washing your hair every two weeks with the TRESemmé Botanic shampoo and conditioner. These TRESemmè products are infused with coconut milk and aloe vera and are free from parabens, silicone and dyes so they’ll gently moisturise your hair. Alternatively, spritz some Dry Shampoo onto your hair to instantly refresh your scalp when time is not on your side.
2. Redo your edges. After a few weeks, it’s normal for your roots to grow, but it can make your edges look untidy. So, when this happens, freshen up your look by reinstalling the braids along your hairline- rather than re-braiding your entire head. Once you’ve taken out your braids along your edges, detangle hair gently and moisturise with a good-quality product before reinstalling your braids.
3. Protect your hair with a scarf. Go to bed with a headscarf around your hairline to keep your braids and edges looking neat for longer. The roots of your hair tend to dry out at night, so sleeping with a scarf will ensure that doesn’t happen. A satin scarf is most preferred as it prevents the hair from breaking and results in a super comfortable sleep.
4. Moisturise your braids. Nobody wants braids that look dry or untamed. Use the TRESemmè Botanic rich oil mist to moisturise and add shine to your braids.
Protective hairstyles are a short-term commitment. So make sure you change your braided hairstyle after no more than eight weeks to avoid any hair loss and to freshen up your style.
