Dopamine is a chemical that transmits messages produced in the brain that has many functions. When released in large amounts, it creates feelings of pleasure and reward, motivating you to repeat specific behaviours.
Healthline explains that, in contrast, low levels of dopamine are connected to reduced motivation and decreased enthusiasm for things most people would find exciting.
However, there are ways to increase your dopamine levels without the use of medication.
Below are five ways you can boost those levels, according to Healthline.
Increase your protein intake
Proteins consist of smaller building blocks called amino acids. One amino acid called tyrosine plays a significant role in the production of dopamine. Tyrosine can also be made from another amino acid called phenylalanine. So, when you consume protein-rich foods, such as beef, turkey, eggs, dairy, etc, you are also boosting your dopamine levels.
Listen to music
This is a fun and easy way to release dopamine in your brain.
Several studies related to brain imaging found that listening to music can increase activity in the reward and pleasure areas of the brain. These areas are rich with dopamine receptors.
Meditate
If you are not in the mood for music, try meditating.
This activity is the practice of clearing your mind, focusing inward, and letting your thoughts float by without judgment or attachment. It also boosts dopamine levels in the brains of experienced meditators. However, it is unclear whether these effects also occur in those who are new to meditation.
Get enough sleep
The release of dopamine in the brain creates feelings of alertness and wakefulness. When people are forced to stay awake, the availability of dopamine receptors in their brains is dramatically reduced. This may result in excessive feelings of sleepiness. Therefore, getting a good night’s rest may help regulate your body’s natural dopamine rhythms.
