Mild or severe, toothache is the pain felt in and around your teeth and jaws, indicating that you might have a problem with your teeth or gums. While taking a trip to the dentist is advisable when trying to find the root of the severe pain you may experience, there are also home remedies to tackle minor pain.
Healthline provides the following five home remedies for toothache.
Saltwater rinse
A go-to for many, saltwater is a natural disinfectant, and can help loosen food particles and debris stuck in between your teeth. Treating toothache with saltwater can also assist in reducing inflammation and heal any oral wounds.
To use this remedy: Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and use it as a mouthwash.
Garlic
Used for thousands of years for its medicinal properties, garlic also has antibacterial properties. It kills harmful bacteria that cause dental plaque while also acting as a pain reliever.
To use this remedy: Crush a garlic clove to create a paste and apply it to the affected area. If you wish, add a tiny bit of salt. Alternatively, you can slowly chew a clove of fresh garlic.
Cold compress
Applying a cold compress causes the blood vessels in the area to constrict, making pain less severe. The cold can also reduce inflammation and swelling.
To use this remedy: Hold a towel-wrapped bag of ice to the affected area for 20 minutes at a time. Repeat every few hours.
Vanilla extract
Vanilla extract contains alcohol which helps numb pain. Its antioxidant properties have also proven to be an effective healer.
Tip: Make sure you use real vanilla rather than imitation vanilla.
To use this remedy: Dab a small amount of vanilla extract onto your finger or a cotton ball, applying it directly to the affected area. Do this a few times per day.
Guava leaves
Guava leaves have antimicrobial activity that can help with oral care as well as anti-inflammatory properties that can help heal wounds.
To use this remedy: Chew on fresh guava leaves or add crushed guava leaves to boiling water to make a mouthwash.
If symptoms of a toothache persists for more than a day or so, it is best to visit your dentist to receive guidance on how to relieve your symptoms and prevent future pain.
You should also consult your dentist before using any of the above remedies if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any medical condition that may be impacted by herbal ingredients.
