There are a number of reasons why you may have a sore throat. Luckily, there are many ways to ease the pain with simple at-home remedies.
Healthline states that sore throats usually cause pain, irritation, or itchiness, while Medical News Today explains that it may be caused by the following:
- acid reflux
- allergies
- smoking or secondhand smoke exposure
- streptococcal pharyngitis, or strep throat, a group A strep bacterial infection
- viruses, such as those that cause colds, flu, or COVID-19
Below are a few remedies that may assist in easing a sore throat.
Gargle with salt water
All you need are two ingredients that you are sure to find in your kitchen cupboards. According to Healthline, gargling with salt water can help soothe a sore throat, reduce swelling, break down secretions, and help reduce bacteria found in the throat. To make the solution, add half a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water.
Use honey
A 2016 study found that taking one tablespoon of honey twice a day can help soothe a sore throat as it contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties, states Medical News Today.
Drink hot or cold fluids
Cold liquids, ice lollies and ice chips can help numb the painful area. Both hot and cold fluids can help ease discomfort by either keeping the throat moist or soothing the throat, explains Medical News Today.
Stay hydrated
The above-mentioned health publication also suggests drinking water as it is an effective way to help sore throats. Those who are unwell should drink more water when exercising or if they are in a hot climate.
Use peppermint
According to Healthline, a 2019 literature review showed that peppermint has anti-inflammatory properties and some antibacterial and antiviral qualities. It also contains menthol, which helps to thin mucus and calm sore throats and coughs.
Use garlic
This vegetable has antibacterial properties too, states Healthline. A 2020 literature review also found that garlic contains the compound allicin which is known for its ability to fight off viral infections. To help soothe a sore throat, suck on or chew a garlic clove. Brush your teeth afterwards to protect them from enzymes and improve your breath.
