Foods to eat when you have a sore throat

Nothing is more annoying to have than a painful throat.

You know when your throat is desperately dry. It hurts to swallow, your neck feels tender, and your voice is…voiceless. And the last thing on your mind is putting anything down your throat.

However, there is food that can help when you have a painful throat.

The best foods for sore throat are foods that are soft and easy to swallow. These foods are less likely to irritate the throat as they pass through the back of your throat. If possible, you should also aim to eat more nutrient-rich soft foods, like soup, and less high-sugar soft foods, like ice cream.

According to Women’s health “eating is a super underrated remedy for a sore throat.”

“Nutrient-dense foods are a low-risk, high-potential gain prescription,” says Cynthia Li, MD, an internal medicine physician and the author of Brave New Medicine. If you manage to get a few bites in here and there, you can load up on vitamins and minerals that’ll help you fight off the infection that’s causing your misery in the first place (think: vitamin C and zinc).

Here are some examples of easy-to-swallow foods:

  • Yogurt
  • Oatmeal
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Eggs
  • Jell-o
  • Pasta
  • Soup
