Have you ever heard of the term Andropause? The chances that you have, could be highly unlikely for some, however, this is a common phase for many men as they mature in age and their bodies experience gradual changes.
According to the health and wellness information publication, Healthline, andropause is often referred to as “male menopause.”
“Male menopause involves a drop in testosterone production in males assigned at birth (MAAB) who are aged 50 or older. It’s often affiliated with hypogonadism. Both conditions involve lowered testosterone levels and similar symptoms.
“The same group of symptoms is also known as testosterone deficiency, androgen deficiency, and late-onset hypogonadism,” explains Healthline.
The health publication further explains that this is different from menopause experienced by females where it affects their menstruation cycle. With cis-gender males, andropause targets the testicles and affects more than just one’s sex drive.
The health publication Cloud Nine Fertility explains that the symptoms of andropause include:
- Erectile dysfunction
- No morning penile erection
- Lack of energy
- Hot flushes
- Muscle mass reduction
- Reduced ability to concentrate
- Excessive sweating
- Depression
- Disturbance in sleep patterns
- Mood swings and Irritability
Meanwhile, Henry County Hospital highlights that while this phase targets men who are mostly in the age category of 40 years and up, it does not affect all men. The before-mentioned health page explains those who do experience it is often as a result of their lifestyle.
Henry County Hospital therefore recommends trying the following to ensure that you manage these symptoms:
- Eat a balanced diet, rich in essential vitamins and nutrients
- Get regular physical activity
- Get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep
- Manage your stress levels
