You are aware of how important it is to look after your mental health. But, as a parent, you’re also limited on time as taking care of kids is a full-time job which can sometimes seem impossible to care for yourself as a parent. However, there are ways you can still take care of yourself which will help boost your mental health while looking after the little ones.
Here is the best way to take care of your mental health as a parent:
Invest in a hobby
Many parents often neglect themselves and place so much focus and energy into their kids which they should by all means, however it is also important to set aside time for yourself as parents and that can be done by investing into a hobby that you are passionate about such as, writing, painting, cooking or even sports. In that way it can help you relax and feel refreshed once you are back with the kids.
Take mental break
Taking a break from your kids is not a sin! According to Healthline’s psychotherapist Kirsten Brunner, LPC, suggest the following beneficial activities while taking a mental break:
- step outside to savour some fresh air
- sit in the car to catch your breath
- take a hot bath
- process your feelings with your partner
- watch a funny or inspiring show
Enough hour of sleep is essential
Many parents neglect their sleep and prioritise their kids’ sleep, and lack of sleep leads to bad mood which therefore increases stress not only for you as a parent but for the whole household because if your mood is not in the best of spirit it creates an atmosphere that is unpleasant for everyone around you.
Healthline recommends parents to set a bedtime routine. The bedtime routine can be done in the following way as suggested by the health publication:
- You can either download a blue-light filter app or change this in each device’s settings. Wearing blue light-blocking spectacles or purchasing smart bulbs for your bedroom that produce more blue light in the morning are other options.
- About 30 minutes before bedtime, stop using electronic gadgets.
- Take part in one or two soothing activities, such as sipping chamomile tea and going through a 10-minute guided meditation.
Finally find ways to connect and this can be done through connecting with other parents or friends. And don’t be too hard on yourself.
