Having difficulty passing stool can be a literal pain. People may suffer from chronic constipation where the problem persists for weeks, or experience mild cases of it.
However, experiencing chronic constipation may cause life-disrupting symptoms that require medical attention, explains WebMD. These symptoms include bloating and cramping, hard stools, decreased appetite, lethargy or having three or fewer bowel movements per week.
Apart from taking laxatives to relieve constipation, apply these other home remedies suggested by WebMD.
Drink coffee
Drinking this beverage will often have you instantly running to the loo.
According to one study, coffee was shown to have a similar effect on the bowels as consuming a meal. The study also showed that drinking coffee had a 60% stronger effect than drinking water alone and a 23% stronger effect than drinking decaffeinated coffee.
Use enemas
This is a procedure that puts liquid into the rectum which often clears out the stool or other blockages.
An enema solution with water and some salt relieves constipation. However, it is suggested that you only use this home remedy after trying other remedies.
Take probiotics
By taking these supplements, you are introducing more ‘good’ bacteria to the gut. Probiotics can also aid in balancing the digestive system.
Studies have also shown that taking probiotics containing the organism bifidobacterium can increase the number of bowel movements you have per week by 1.3. Although, larger studies are still needed to solidify these results.
Adjust your lifestyle
- Eat more fibre: The inclusion of fibre in your diet will make your stool more weighty and help it to move faster through your intestines. High-fibre foods include fruits and vegetables, whole grains and nuts.
- Drink more water: An increase in your intake of water may relieve constipation, especially when consumed in combination with the fibrous foods mentioned above.
- Avoid dairy products: Studies have shown that the consumption of dairy may add to the problem of constipation.
- Exercise more: This activity promotes healthy, regular digestion. It is also said that strong abdominal muscles help to improve your digestive process.
