It is always best to get help from a professional therapist if you are going through depression. However, if you cannot afford a therapist or want to get the most from your therapy, there are a few things you can do to help yourself through depression.
Depression is defined as a mood disorder that involves a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It is different from the mood fluctuations that people regularly experience as a part of life.
Healthline suggests these tips to help yourself through depression:
Exercise
If you do not like the gym, consider taking regular walks especially on the days when you feel like you cannot get out of bed. Healthline states that exercise and physical activities can help to lower symptoms of depression and boost energy levels.
Force yourself to do the opposite of what your depression tells you
The untrue voices in your head can lead you astray and may derail your healing journey. Do not listen to these voices. When the voice tells you not to go to that staff party because ‘people will not like you’, disregard that voice and go anyway.
Set attainable goals
Do not be too hard on yourself. Do not overwhelm yourself with loads of things to do on each day cause you might not even do anything. Set attainable goals that will give you a sense of control and accomplishment.
Reward yourself
When you achieve a goal, do your best to recognise and celebrate it. According to Healthline, recognising your own successes can be a very powerful weapon against depression’s negative weight.
