Is there a reason to worry about your mole? Here’s when to consider it seriously

There are times when we tend to overlook things and say, “It cannot be serious.” Nowadays, even the most trivial things cannot be ignored, for instance, in the case of discovering a mole. What are the chances of it not being suspicious?

It is not to promote paranoia, but simply to advise individuals to pay attention to their skin more. You never know how lucky you might be to catch something early.

According to Healthily, “Moles are small spots, usually brown but sometimes tan, black, blue, pink or red. The medical name for them is naevi, nevi or nevus. They’re usually made by a group of skin pigment cells called melanocytes.”

While moles are harmless and normal to have, they can occasionally change or new ones can develop, the above health website adds.

Christine Poblete-Lopez, a dermatologist claims, “The rule of thumb in dermatology is to consider the ABCDEs.”

The above expert further explains the above rule stating:

  • A = Asymmetry: The asymmetry could be problematic if you have a mole where the two halves do not match.
  • B = Border: A blurry, ragged, fuzzy, or poorly defined mole border may raise suspicions.
  • C = Color: It is advisable to view moles with two or three distinct colours of brown with caution. Moles that are white, black, red, blue, or grey may also be signs of potential melanoma.
  • D = Diameter: Moles bigger than 6 millimetres, or about the size of a pencil eraser, are usually cause for concern. With that said, melanomas can also be precisely measured in size.
  • E = Evolution: Examine the noticeable alterations in your mole.

Health information website, Everyday Health further explains that when you notice a suspicious skin mole, it’s important to approach a medical expert because it could be a sign of malignant melanoma, a potentially life-threatening type of skin cancer.
