Despite what people say, it’s actually okay to be vain.
When we hear the word “vanity” or use the adjective “vain” to describe someone, we often build a negative perception of that person.
The word “vanity” is often defined as an “inflated sense of pride in oneself or one’s appearance”. The word has been thrown around so regularly that people often forget what it truly means. We see the word “vain” used to describe people, specifically women, who simply care about their appearance. Which, in all honesty, is not just a mere symptom of vanity.
It’s okay to value your appearance. In fact, valuing your appearance can be quite beneficial. According to the LA Times, the desire to look good and stay that way can be a strong motivator for one’s health and fitness. The reality is that if you care more about your appearance, you’re more likely to make healthier lifestyle choices. These healthy lifestyle choices will later be beneficial to your overall health and wellness.
Talking about yourself and your appearance in a positive light can also have major benefits for your self-esteem. When you describe yourself in a positive manner, you begin to accept yourself and your appearance. A boost in self-esteem and self-acceptance can have effects, not just on your physical health, but on your mental health as well.
Loving yourself and worrying about your appearance shouldn’t be seen as faults. You should want to look good and take care of yourself, because if you don’t do it, who will?
