We can all agree that for most women, the fear of giving birth is a real thing, specifically the fear of the pain that comes with the birthing process.
Now, imagine there’s an option for moms to give birth while hypnotised, you are deeply relaxed to experience any severe pain.
Medical News Today explains that hypnobirthing is a birth preparation method that uses self-hypnosis, relaxation, and breathing techniques to create a more positive and controlled childbirth experience. This process’s aim is said to be to reduce fear and anxiety, reducing tension and pain during labour.
“A core principle of the hypnobirthing philosophy is that childbirth does not have to be a severely painful or traumatic experience. Fear and anxiety can increase tension and pain during labour, often leading to a more difficult birthing process.”
Healthline details that this process includes controlled breathing techniques, such as deep breathing in and out through the nose, and focusing on positive thoughts and words. Other techniques include guided visualisation, music, and meditation.
It is stated that these techniques aim to help the mother give birth in a state similar to daydreaming, allowing her to be fully aware of her surroundings, become more relaxed, and manage pain and stress hormones. By releasing endorphins, the body is said to be able to submit fully to the task ahead.
According to The Bump, in hypnobirthing, self-hypnosis, breathing, and visualisation are techniques used to cope with labour pain. This technique is said to teach using breath with contractions during active labour, transition, and pushing the baby out. “Visualisation and affirmations are often used in tandem to help you prepare mentally for the birth. This is all about replacing fear with focus.”
