Simple mind-calming activities

by Sergio Miller

As parents approach the end of the year, things can become quite stressful. You might find yourself struggling to meet the demands of a difficult client at work, who despite your best efforts just won’t sign off on a deal. Then there is also the planning of what to prepare for a Christmas lunch and keeping your guests entertained.

According to Forbes – a popular lifestyle publication – one of the common causes of end-of-year stress is that people have so much to do in a short period of time.

The amount of stress and anxiety that you have to endure feels endless, and while all you want to do is just relax there are certain things that you can do that will help relieve your stress.

Intention setting exercise

According to Good House Keeping – an online lifestyle magazine – taking a few moments to centre yourself before starting your day can be helpful.

Activities like journaling, meditation, movement or reading an uplifting book can be effective in setting your intentions. If you find it challenging to establish a morning routine, you can find a few minutes in the afternoon or evening to focus on your intentions. Even a short 10-minute session can make a difference!

Embracing nature

To reduce negative emotions and improve your wellbeing, try spending time in nature or with your pet.

It can boost positive thoughts and have a positive impact on your physical health by lowering stress hormones, blood pressure, and muscle tension. So, try connecting with nature and feel the difference it can make in your life!

Try water therapy

Relaxing in water can be therapeutic. Swim or float in warm weather, or take a warm bath when it’s cold. It can soothe your mind and help to ease sore muscles, recommends Calm – a blog that is dedicated to mindfulness and cultivating a healthier and happier life.

Hug a loved one

According to Very Well Mind – a health and wellness publication – hugging a loved one can alleviate stress by releasing oxytocin – the “cuddle hormone”. Oxytocin decreases stress and increases happiness levels. It also lowers blood pressure and reduces the stress hormone norepinephrine, leading to relaxation.
