They say summer bodies are built in winter, but for many this saying is easier said than done, this is because getting up and taking a jog in the early hours of the morning is often slightly more difficult due to the darkness and cold temperatures that can be unpleasant for many to train in.
This makes room for procrastination, and procrastination makes room for laziness and once this kicks in, there is a good chance that you find yourself ending the year in a much unhealthier state than the way you entered it.
There are of course those who at least give exercising a try but later find themselves quitting because of the effects of the cold weather making training difficult.
“The body needs to work harder to perform in a harsher climate and be able to generate adequate heat to keep warm,” explains Froedtert Medical College.
However, many would be surprised to discover that this is the perfect time to start training to increase those fitness levels.
According to fitness company Wiemspro training in cold weather has the following benefits:
- Kick-starts the immune system
- Boosts weight loss
- Reduces dehydration
Meanwhile, lifestyle publication Sun Life recommends trying the following to ensure that you maintain your fitness during winter months:
Do outdoor winter activities – There are several easy outdoor activities that you can participate in to ensure that you remain fit. This includes skating at your local ice rink, cycling, or even taking a swim in your pool or the one at the gym.
Work out at home – Incorporating home workouts into your day can help keep your body in optimal shape. Try downloading home workout apps, skipping rope jumps or Zumba dance workouts.
Find a workout partner – Sometimes having a partner is all you need to be motivated. This is especially beneficial when it comes to outdoor training. According to the above-mentioned publication, this helps you hold one another accountable.
