I don’t have to preach about the importance of our physical well-being. Moving your body is a blessing, but when the little aches and pains creep up, we realise we may have taken movement for granted. After throwing my back out of alignment – sharp, stringing and burning sensations made a home in my lower back – hindering my mobility and range of motion significantly and leaving me in immobilising pain. After multiple rounds of different forms of treatment, I had nowhere else to turn but to a Chiropractor.
What is chiropractic care?
Chiropractic care is a holistic approach to health that focuses on treating musculoskeletal pains and disorders, particularly those related to the spine. Chiropractors use manual adjustments and other techniques to realign the body’s structure, ensuring proper function and promoting natural healing.
The decision to see a chiropractor came with a lot of hesitance and anxiety due to the location of my pain and what people told me. The spine is not to be messed around with and although I heard that chiropractors can do more harm than good, I was in desperate need of some sort of relief. My pain was the result of extreme coughing for a month but whether it’s the long hours spent hunched over a computer, the demands of family life, or the stresses of daily commutes or incorrect form in exercise, our bodies can take a real beating.
The benefits of seeing a Chiropractor
Pain relief
One of the most immediate benefits of seeing a chiropractor is pain relief. Whether it’s lower back pain, neck pain, or headaches, many patients report significant improvements after just a few sessions. By addressing misalignments in the spine, chiropractors can alleviate pressure on nerves and muscles, leading to reduced discomfort.
Because our entire body is connected, the discomfort was now felt in my neck too, glutes hamstrings and knees. I was starting to think turning 30 had something to do with these aches and pains.
Viral social media videos portrayed loud popping sounds made from the adjustments and this is true. What can only be described as absolutely weird, my chiro proceeded to adjust my neck. The sound and feeling were like nothing I had experienced before. My natural response was to laugh LOL! The adjustments are not sore but it is strange when mixed with the muscle-popping sound.
But – I had instant pain relief and my neck range of motion had improved. My lower back is another story
Improved mobility and flexibility
Regular chiropractic adjustments can enhance your range of motion and flexibility. If you find it challenging to perform everyday activities—like bending down to tie your shoes or reaching for items on a high shelf—chiropractic care can help restore your body’s natural movement patterns, making daily tasks easier and more comfortable.
Laying down, sitting and standing sends shooting pains through my body so I’ve had to learn to compromise on certain movements. But, my fears and frustrations came about when I dropped something on the floor or returned to the gym.
My chiropractor encourages moving my body no matter how painful and stretching is very important.
Enhanced posture
Poor posture is a common issue, especially among those who spend hours at desks or use their phones frequently. Chiropractors can assess your posture and recommend adjustments to improve alignment. Better posture reduces pain, boosts confidence, and even enhances respiratory function.
The vicious cycle exists because poor posture results in pain but the pain stops you from correcting the posture. After my first appointment, my posture improved tremendously.
I was able to stand tall with an open chest gleaming out as opposed to hunching over.
Stress reduction
Did you know that physical pain can contribute to stress? When your body is misaligned, it can create tension and discomfort, leading to a cycle of stress and pain. Chiropractic care helps release tension in the body, promoting relaxation and a sense of well-being.
I felt more balanced and calm after visits and my sleep improved too.
Preventative care
Regular chiropractic visits can serve as a form of preventative care. By keeping your spine aligned and your body functioning optimally, you may be able to avoid future injuries and health issues. Think of it as regular maintenance for your body, similar to how you would service your car to keep it running smoothly.
What to expect on your first visit
If you’re considering seeing a chiropractor, your first visit typically involves an initial consultation. The chiropractor will ask about your medical history, current symptoms, and any specific concerns. They may perform a physical examination, including posture assessment and spinal alignment checks.
Once they’ve gathered enough information, they’ll discuss a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs. This may include adjustments, exercises, and recommendations for lifestyle changes.
Is a chiropractor right for you?
Chiropractic care can be a beneficial option for many individuals, but it’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new treatment. If you’re dealing with chronic pain, or stiffness, or simply want to improve your overall wellness, visiting a chiropractor might just be the right step for you.
My chiropractor and I have a good relationship and a steadfast treatment plan to regain my range of motion and mobility regarding my lower back. I think this was a hit for me and I will return in a heartbeat.
Whether you want to relieve discomfort or maintain your health, a chiropractor can be a valuable partner on your wellness journey.
So why not give it a try with caution? Your body will thank you!
