Teas that will help you sleep

Tea is not only an enjoyable drink, but also an aromatic beverage that helps you catch some zzz’s before you go to bed.

Tea is cured or fresh crushed leaves which is infused with boiling water.

According to Healthline, there is an array of herbal teas that have been used for centuries as natural sleeping remedies. The teas have been known to fight insomnia, stress and anxiety. Some teas have even been studied for their sleep-promoting properties.

If you are looking to have a relaxing and peaceful rest, see below the six types of tea to help you with just that, as explained by Healthline.

  1. Chamomile tea: This popular go-to is made from the chamomile plant which has a delicate floral flavour and sedative effects. Studies showed that chamomile safely improves sleep quality, although it does not significantly affect insomnia.
  2. Lavender tea: This tea is made by brewing lavender flower buds in water. This process creates a vibrant purple drink with a distinct aroma and flavour. According to research, it is possible for lavender to promote relaxation and enhance your quality of sleep.
  3. Low caffeine green tea: Green tea is popularly known for its health benefits and distinct flavour. Some studies suggest that the tea helps to improve your sleep quality and battle insomnia. When you are choosing to buy green tea, be sure to choose a brand that has low or no caffeine in it if your plan is to drink it before you sleep.
  4. Magnolia tea: This is made from the bark, buds and stems from the magnolia plant, and is often used as a natural sleep aid in quite a few forms of traditional medicine. The plant contains two compounds which produce sedative effects – honokiol and magnolol.
  5. Passionflower tea: The passionflower has been studies for its significant medicinal properties. The plant’s extracts is widely used as a herbal supplement. Studies have concluded that passionflower herbal preparations can act as a natural sedative. It has also been shown to help relieve anxiety.
  6. Valerian tea: Used as a herb or supplement, the plant’s dried roots when brewed can act as a natural sleep aid. While the valerain root could reduce anxiety, additional studies are needed to further understand its effects.
