What to add to your coffee for those added health benefits

There’s nothing better than starting your day with a freshly brewed cup of coffee. Scratch that – is there any other way to start your day?

While we understand the “benefits” of getting a much-needed jolt of caffeine, some would say it’s not all that healthy. If you’re not ready to shake off your caffeine dependency anytime soon, why not add a healthy boost to your morning cup of joe?

Here are a few of our favourite ways to sprinkle a few health benefits into your morning drink:

Collagen

Collagen has been a bit of a buzzword of late and for good reason. It’s a must for those looking to improve their hair, skin, nails, and joints, but is an incredibly easy way to sneak more protein into your diet too. According to Healthline, as we get older, our bodies start to slow down on the production of collagen, so just one scoop in your morning coffee can help support those important bodily functions.

Adaptogens

Adaptogens are a nifty tool to have in your back pocket as it helps to counteract the effects of stress on the body. There is a range of adaptogens to include in your diet, but here are a few of our favourites.

  • Reishi mushrooms: Great for those looking for help with sleep and stress as it helps to create calm in the body.
  • Lion’s Mane: Perfect for those looking to create focus and be a bit more productive.
  • Chaga: Ideal for those looking to support their immune system and aid gut health.
  • Ashwagandha: Improves hormonal balance, reduces stress and has antibacterial properties.

Cacao

The Mayans drank cacao during celebrations and ceremonies, so you can imagine that this ancient power has plenty of benefits. There’s tons of research on cacao, and they all come to the same conclusion: it improves brain function, reduces inflammation and is packed with antioxidants.  It’s also a great way to sneak more chocolate into your diet.

Turmeric

From turmeric lattes to a sprinkle of this popular spice into your drink. There are plenty of health benefits that come with adding this spice to your morning drink with the most common being its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. It’s also loaded with antioxidants and can be a great alternative to drinking coffee if you’re looking to cut down.
