Why you shouldn’t hold in your farts

by Unathi Balele

Farts – we all do it, but nobody wants to talk about it. It’s a natural bodily function that often gets pushed aside in polite society.

Many of us have been taught from a young age to hold in our farts in the name of manners and decorum. But what if I told you that holding in your farts might not be such a great idea after all?

Let us explore the reasons why you shouldn’t hold in your farts and why it’s essential to let it out, both for your physical and mental well-being.

It’s Natural

First and foremost, let’s acknowledge the fact that farting is entirely natural. It’s a normal part of the digestive process, and your body releases gas for a reason. When you eat and drink, you also swallow air, which eventually needs to find its way out. Trying to suppress something as natural as passing gas can lead to discomfort and potential health issues.

It Can Be Painful

According to Medical News Today, holding in gas can lead to discomfort and even pain. When you try to keep it in, the gas builds up in your digestive system, causing bloating, cramps, and a general feeling of fullness. This can be particularly painful and bothersome if you’ve been holding it in for an extended period.

It Can Lead to Digestive Problems

Medical News Today notes that continuously holding in your farts can disrupt your digestive system. It can slow down the normal movement of gas through your intestines, potentially leading to constipation and other digestive issues. Over time, this can affect your overall gut health and make it harder for your body to process food efficiently.
