Give your clothing some staying power with these quick-fix laundry tips to help make your clothes last longer. They’re simple, inexpensive and definitely work a treat.
1. Read the labels. You should definitely pay heed to the care instructions on your clothing labels. They contain invaluable and customized information relating to how you should be treating your clothing. These tips are designed to help keep your clothes in good nick, so take the time to read and abide by the instructions.
2. Don’t overload the washing machine. Stuffing the washing machine full of clothes may seem like an easy way to get your laundry done quickly, but it can damage your clothing. This is because a crammed washing machine causes clothing to rub together much more, which can damage your clothes. In addition, your clothing won’t be as clean.

3. Go easy on detergent. Using too much washing powder or fabric softener is a bad idea. In fact, it can dull colours and leave fabric feeling stiff. The reality is that most detergents contain chemicals, and including more product increases the number of chemicals your clothing will be exposed to.
4. Step away from the bleach. Bleach and other stain removers that include chlorine amongst their ingredients, weaken and damage the fabric. Especially if used in high concentration. If you have a stain that you simply must treat, ensure the bleach is diluted and follow the instructions on the labels.

5. Play it cool. Hot temperatures can cause shrinking, stretching and weakening of fabric. Heat can also set stains permanently. Rather opt for a cooler wash to help your clothes last longer (and save electricity).
Other tips to help your clothes last longer
- Separate white and coloured garments and run in two separate loads, this will reduce the likelihood of colours running.
- Close zips, buttons and other fastenings before washing so they don’t snag other clothes, which may cause rips and tears.
- Turn coloured clothes inside out before hanging out to dry. This will prevent fading.
- Use plastic or wooden hangers, when hanging your clothes up. Thin, wire hangers can cause stretching.
- Fold knitted and delicate items rather than hang to prevent stretching.
