Which race did you run this year for the Nike Soweto marathon?
I took part in the 10km race this year because I had a marathon (42km) in September and needed to rest and recover.
What motivation do you have for our readers on running and being healthy?
Starting is the first step, and it does not have to be a big race. Running helps build up your strength and ability to run further. There is a race in every town on weekends, and spending time with other runners will keep you motivated.
What does running the Soweto marathon mean to you?
It’s always an emotional race because it’s at home and the supporters on the road – offering water and cheering me on – are people I grew up around. The race track passes by historical places such as the Hector Pieterson museum so it feels like our fallen heroes are watching over us.
Do you follow a strict diet and what does it consist of?
I actually don’t follow a diet plan, but this does not mean I am encouraging others to do the same. I feel that everybody knows their own body and what it will allow or what works for it.
Who is your biggest competitor?
I am my own competitor when it comes to anything in life. I believe the only goals to beat are your own and that is how one improves them.
What are your goals for the future?
I want to be at the 2016 Olympic. It’s hard to qualify in South Africa. I don’t just want to be at the Olympics as part of Team SA, but would love to break records and have medals that will always remind me of my achievements.
