What do you get when go to a natural reserve, where zebras minding their business roam around while you decide whether to go to a spa or float in a mega-sized pool? A wonderful country retreat, hidden between the mountains of Magaliesburg – Valley Lodge & Spa. Our copy editor Zethu Zulu was invited to check out the Valley Lodge & Spa in Magaliesburg, she shares 10 things she loved and enjoyed.
I had the tough job on going there this weekend. After a 55 minute drive from Johannesburg, I arrived at the venue. There is so much to see, and do; one weekend was not enough.
On arrival, you check in by 2pm. There are over 70 rooms that are individually decorated, which are spread out around the lodge. My room was quite a distance away so I had to drive from reception, over a small bridge, to my room.
The rooms are very spacious. The decor is chic, contemporary and elegant. They are equipped with everything you need and want: a fireplace, two TVs, aircon, floor heating, baked goodies, tea and coffee (basically, all the things you need in winter). The bed also has an electric blanket, which was very welcome.
When it came to the scenery, I was blown away. I forgot I was at a nature reserve, so I was surprised to see two zebras grazing outside my room. Not far from them were several monkeys, chattering away. Where my room was located, was right next to a mountain, with the Magalies River running all the way around the area and a forest.
When I took a stroll, I saw at least 3 snakes. The lodge is home to a number of different birds, monkeys, zebras, snakes, hedgehogs and other free roaming animals.
The staff is well-trained, friendly and helpful. I received a platter with delicious things to nibble on. If I got lost, someone was always around to guide me back to my room.
There are many things to do. There’s a spa, tennis courts, a gym, a pool, several walking trails and a bar. I went to the spa, where I got a full body massage. It was worth it!
You can also go canoeing, bird watching or play several board games.
The menu caters for all tastes. I went for the lamb shank with veggies, but you can choose from a variety of dishes. The breakfast also has everything you can think of.
Go there if you’re looking to relax, get in touch with your adventurous side or just marvel at nature. Valley Lodge & Spa is peaceful, beautiful and affordable.
