Mafikeng/Mahikeng is a small town situated in the North West. The popularity of artists like Cassper Nyovest, Khuli Chana, Fifi Cooper and HHP (who were all born there) as well as the huge numbers that pull in for the 60s bash has shifted the perception of Mafikeng from sleepy town to a buzzing party hub. However that’s not the only reason why you should visit this place. Our Digital Editor, Bongiwe Tshiqi recently discovered that it’s perfect for those in desperate need of a time out. She tells us about her experience here.
Getting there
My friend and I traveled from Joburg on a Friday afternoon. The drive was easy and quick and the road aren’t bothersome or congested.
Accommodation
We stayed at Mmabatho Palms. It’s a gorgeous and peaceful hotel (despite the fact that there’s a casino on the ground floor). The rooms are quite spacious, clean and well maintained and the service was great.
I especially liked the interesting light fixtures found throughout the hotel. They are currently renovating, I really hope they maintain this feature.
Food
We dined at the hotel restaurant and bar, Motswedi Terrace Restaurant and that was a great thing. The menu fulfills a variety of tastes; from shisanyama to seafood platters. It’s not fancy and groundbreaking but it’s delicious and boy are their servings hefty. Seriously; they don’t believe in faffing around with small helpings, you will get your fill and then some!
What to do
It is a small town so there isn’t too much to do however it’s not boring either. There are a few historical sites including Kgotla of the Barolong Boora, Tshidi Maratiwa House, Mafikeng Museum and Siege Headquarters, Mmabana Cultural Centre and the Lotlamoreng Game Reserve. You can also visit the remains of Credo Mutwa’s Cultural Village which is still a sight to behold. What’s most interesting is finding out about the history of Bophuthatswana and the differences between now and then. Additionally, it’s one of the most developed small towns I’ve ever been to, boasting an ICC, stadium and airport.
Mafikeng is best for relaxing though. If you want time out from your life with your friends or bae; it’s a great venue for that. You can get calming spa treatments, relax in the abundance of nature or for golf enthusiasts – try out their golf estates. I highly recommend it for an affordable mini break. You will come back rejuvenated without feeling like you’re broke.
