The matric class of 2022 is awaiting their final exam results, this is a defining moment for many students as their future after high school awaits. Its time to mentally prepare yourself for the outcomes of your results.
South Africa has witnessed some students who were overcome by depression and anxiety after they didn’t pass matric exams, some drop out and don’t pursue their studies anymore.
There are ways to get ahead of mentally preparing yourself or your child on how to receive whether good or bad news, from receiving results to what’s next. Knowing that its okay and there are options out there is a start.
According to MISA “Some students become overwhelmed by stress, fear of failure, rejection by peers and society, angry/disappointed parents, self- loathing and self-pity. When all of these feelings are added to pre-existing problems or issues that the teens are facing, it becomes a tipping point that can at times lead to suicide.”
Optimi advises students on the following, to keep your head held high and consider options:
The past is where it belongs
Remind yourself that you did all that you could when you were writing your exams and your anxiety about your results won’t change the outcome.Think logically and weigh your options should you pass or not.
Practicing mindfulness
Be mindful and aware of how to deal with anxiety and worrying, find ways that will get your mind to stop overthinking about the results. Be realistic about your expectations
Consider all your options
Lower marks are not the end of the world, there are a few options you can take to improve them should you wish to go to University, for example, Adult metric programs.
