Our features writer Fundiswa Nkwanyana tells us about spending time at the child-friendly Lion & Safari Park with her son, Oratile.
I often struggle to find fun and informative activities to keep my seven-year-old son entertained. His overactive imagination turns everything into an adventure, making it tricky to keep him focused on one activity. But, our love for nature steered us to the Lion & Safari Park in Hartbeespoort – about an hour’s drive from Johannesburg.
CLOSE VIEWS OF THE ANIMALS
Upon arrival, our tour guide Shandor promised us an opportunity to see the animals at very close range as he was going to be feeding some of them. The thought of seeing lions, cheetahs and wild dogs up close both excited and made us nervous. As our bumpy drive began through the wilderness, we spotted two giraffes that recognised Shandor’s voice and came towards the vehicle. We were able to touch them and Oratile couldn’t hold his excitement. Having a guide was helpful as he answered all our questions. He even entertained Oratile’s questions that originated from watching cartoon shows. The most exciting part of our tour was seeing Shandor feeding and interacting with the lions. From there, we could see their sharp teeth and claws. Shandor also easily spotted animals hiding in the bushes and gave us in-depth information about them. We also saw zebras, gemsboks, springboks and many others. Seeing the animals so closely was a life-changing experience that will stay with us forever.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE
As the wildlife tour ended, we had a better understanding of wild animals and how they live. The three hours we spent at the park made us feel like we were part of the animal kingdom. We also enjoyed a scrumptious meal at the restaurant in the park and also purchased souvenirs. This affordable and informative wildlife visit is perfect for the whole family.
